Hi, my name is Michael McGowan. I'm a free agent baseball analyst looking to sign with the Pirates. I have strong math, data, and software development skills that I've applied to a wide variety of domains over the past 13 years or so...from healthcare data to complex financial derivatives to yes, of course, baseball. For example, I once worked with government contractors to mathematically model the spread of infectious disease during the pandemic...but I'm not talking about COVID. This was the swine flu pandemic of 2009.

After many years with baseball analytics as a hobby, eventually I had some fortunate life and financial circumstances that gave me the freedom to leave my more traditional day job to pursue baseball analytics full-time. I've been working independently so far, but I'd like to get promoted to the big leagues.

Now I'm also a lifelong Pirates fan. I've been attending games since the days of Jay Bell and Kevin Young in Three Rivers Stadium, and I've been a season ticket holder since 2013. Of course you shouldn't hire me just because I like the team, but I think it shows that I'll be invested in helping the team win. And I probably shouldn't admit this part out loud, but like many 1st round draft picks, I'm willing to sign an "underslot" deal to help infuse the team with more talent and surplus value.

I invite you to explore this website a bit to learn a little about some of my projects, such as my player projection and simulation tool called CASSIE. So far I've chosen to keep a lot of my work private, so you won't be able to find all the details in my public Github repo.
I look forward to talking more about this with you in our interview. Thank you for your time and consideration, and let's go Bucs!

Special Skills

Mathematical Modeling

I have worked in various mathematical and statistical modeling techniques and paradigms including machine learning, predictive analytics, Bayesian inference, and simulation.

Software Development

In addition to my background in mathematics and statistics, I have training and experience in professional software development. Shipping production quality software involves software engineering and testing skills often overlooked when the software is an afterthought to the algorithms.

Financial Derivatives Valuation

I developed software to automatically value financial derivatives, and there are parallels between derivatives and professional baseball contracts. This is especially true when factors like team options are involved.
